50 Hindu devotees staged a peaceful protest in front of the Selangor State Secretariat

SHAH ALAM: About 50 Hindu devotees staged a peaceful protest in front of the Selangor State Secretariat building here yesterday, urging the state government to prevent the demolition of a 124-year-old Hindu temple in Subang Jaya.
Seafield Sri Maha Mariamman temple advisor L Sivasubramaniam said he was informed by the state government that the temple would soon be demolished for relocation to a new site at Persiaran Harmoni in Putra Heights.

"We note that a temporary structure had already been built in Putra Heights to relocate the original temple from Subang Jaya.
"This should not have happened as the previous Barisan Nasional-led state government, through its executive council meeting in August 2001, decided to retain the original temple at Seafield, Subang Jaya," he said.

He was speaking to reporters before submitting a memorandum on the issue to Menteri Besar Tan Sri Abdul Khalid Ibrahim, via a state government representative here. Commenting further, Sivasubramaniam said the temple committee wanted the state
government to approve a grant to enable the temple to remain at the current site.

"This is our heritage. The temple is more than a century old. Why should anyone demolish our heritage?," he asked.
Previously, the Seafield Sri Maha Mariamman temple stood on a 0.4 hectare estate land before it was claimed by a developer. It was reported that in 1987, after the estate owner had sold the land to a company, the state government allocated 0.4 hectare for the temple but neglected to gazette the land for religious purposes.
The ownership of the land has since changed hands and the temple authorities are now involved in a court case against the land's current developers.  Sivasubramaniam said the state government should not relocate the temple as the case was still pending in court. — Bernama
